Abstract

The brutality of the ongoing Third Balkan War was a surprise for many of the believers in Mikhail Gorbachev's "European House" or George Bush's "New World Order." It exposed the inability of Europeans and North-Americans to understand its causes and diplomatically prevent its outbreak or domesticate its course. Among its numerous and com plex causes most important is the new Serbian nationalism.1 It is based on an extensive history and mythology of Serbian particularism and hegemonistic endeavours. In this article some older elements of Serbian "national identity" are first sketched, then the antinomies of the Serbian position within Yugoslavia are shown, and finally the actual Serbian ideology motivating the war is analysed.
