Abstract

A new wedge-type surface acoustic wave (SAW) transducer is proposed in which a bulk-wave transducer and a wedge are unified by forming the planar shear-wave transducer on a slant surface of an unpoled piezoelectric ceramic wedge. It is confirmed by experiments that the proposed transducer has appreciably broad bandwidth and efficient conversion characteristics and can be modified to generate and detect the radial (converging and diverging) SAW's by using a ceramic wedge with a conical surface and fabricating a planar shear-wave transducer on the surface.
