Abstract

Brown shrimp Penaeus aztecus Ives, 1891 seems to be well adapted in the Ionian Sea since its first occurrence in the coastal zone of the island of Corfu during 2013. In the current work, we present additional new records from Argostoli Gulf (Cephalonia Island), Sagiada Bay (Therspotia, NW Greece) and Mesoggi (Corfu Island), which verify the wider distribution of the species. Moreover, direct contacts with shrimpers in the region, suggested that commercial exploitation of the species has been recently established. Although it poses potential threats to the lucrative caramote shrimp (Penaeus kerathurus) populations, which support the income of the fishing communities in the region, the presence of P. aztecus populations represents a new promising fisheries resource.
