New records of late Berriasian and late Valanginian Orbitolinidae (Foraminifera) from the eastern Getic Carbonate Platform (South Carpathians, Romania)

Abstract

Orbitolinids with simple embryo and a reduced exoskeletal complexity are reported for the first time from upper Berriasian and upper Valanginian strata of the eastern part of the Getic Carbonate Platform system (Southern Carpathians, Romania). Most of the described taxa belong to the genera Cribellopsis Arnaud-Vanneau and Orbitolinopsis Henson. Other taxa are treated in open nomenclature due to the scarcity of available material and/or poor preservation. Some of them are already well known from the Berriasian of eastern Serbia, and some species have been occasionally found in other places along the northern margin of the Neotethys. The upper Berriasian and upper Valanginian occurrences of dictyoconids in the Southern Carpathians widen the paleogeographic distribution of the earliest record of this group of larger benthic foraminifera.
