Abstract

A new material for the genus Afrohercostomus Grichanov, 2010 was recently collected and/or identified. The present research gives new records, including A. eronis (Curran, 1926) found for the first time in Cameroon and Ethiopia, A. golubtsovi (Grichanov, 1999) in Burundi, A. ultimus (Parent, 1935) in Uganda, and A. jani (Dyte, 1957) in Kenya. First colour photographs are provided for A. eronis and A. jani.

Highlights

  • The species of the genus Afrohercostomus were separated from the Hercostomus Loew, 1857 by Grichanov (2010), who provided a key for the Afrotropical species of Afrohercostomus

  • A. argyropus (Loew, 1858) with two parapatric subspecies has the widest distribution in the region

  • Material cited in this work is housed at the National Museum, Bloemfontein, South Africa (BMSA), Bielefeld University, Bielefeld, Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany (BU) and the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia (ZMUM)

Summary

Introduction

The species of the genus Afrohercostomus were separated from the Hercostomus Loew, 1857 by Grichanov (2010), who provided a key for the Afrotropical species of Afrohercostomus. The genus consists of 14 described and named species, which are all Afrotropical [see Grichanov (2018) for a catalogue of included species], known from Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar (?), Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe (Fig. 1). In this paper I provide new records for known species of the genus and first colour pictures for A. eronis (Curran, 1926) and A. jani (Dyte, 1957). I.Ya.
