Abstract

Claudine Herzlich had not manipulated her samples of Parisians and Normans statistically. In particular, the more positive and egocentric approach of those in positions of greater power and wealth compares markedly with the more negative and sociocentric definitions among manual workers who have fewer resources and less self-determination available to them. The workshop which Bert Tax organised in 1984 showed how widely the study of lay concepts of health is pursued on the mainland of Europe. The age dimension is shown to be more of a discriminating factor in the closed questions than in the open question. Hence the more marked correlations between the synchronic and diachronic dimensions, managers and young people combining to emerge together at the positive and egocentric pole of the attitudinal grid, with manual workers and the older age groups at the negative and socio-centric pole.
