Abstract

Variable-speed multiphase (more than three phases) drive systems have become an increasingly important topics compared with conventional three-phase one due to their distinct advantages. This paper presents a new PWM technique for controlling a three-to-five phase matrix converter in order to reduce switching losses and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), simultaneously, by reducing the number of switching commutations during the control period. Also, the proposed PWM technique of the matrix converter provides full output voltage and frequency control in addition to unity input power factor. Moreover, the proposed PWM technique provides output voltage ratio equal to 78.86 % of the input voltage at unity power factor. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme has been verified experimentally using laboratory prototype controlled by dspace-1006.
