Abstract

A new method for the synthesis of polyphenylenes with phenylphosphonate side groups was developed. The method is based on transformations of p-bromophenyl-substituted polyphenylenes via the substitution of the diethyl phosphonate group for bromine in the presence of a palladium catalyst and the hydrolysis of this group giving polymers with free phosphonic acid groups.
