Abstract

Significance The DPP candidate, Tsai Ing-wen, will become Taiwan's first female president and the first DPP president to preside over a legislature controlled by her party. Impacts The DPP legislative caucus will likely press for constitutional revisions and other legislation that will infuriate Beijing. Washington will maintain good relations with the Tsai administration, avoiding the acrimony seen during the last DPP administration. Tsai will face considerable headwinds in a slowing economy reliant on exports, especially to China.
