Abstract

Abstract Five new potato varieties have been released by the Crop Research Division. Previous new varieties were named by using Maori numerals (Tahi = one, Rua = two) and this system has been continued with ‘Toru’, ‘Wha’, ‘Rima’, ‘Ono’, and ‘Whitu’, the Maori words for numbers three to seven. ‘Toru’ is most suitable as a second early,‘Wha’ and ‘Whitu’ are particularly good for frying, ‘Rima’ is a maincrop with floury texture and also suitable for French fries, and ‘Ono’ is for those high-fertility conditions where other varieties grow too big. ‘Ono’ has very high dry matter and may be suitable for crisps. All the varieties have a high resistance to blight except ‘Ono’, which has moderate field resistance. All are immune to or highly resistant to the mosaic viruses X and Y.
