Abstract

SummaryThe metal finisher's constant demand for new colours under new conditions of use results in a requirement for new pigments. The pigment manufacturer's approach to meeting these requirements is discussed. The technical requirements of pigments for use in metal finishes are described together with the constraints placed on the use of many pigments by the conditions under which the finish is applied and by the requirements of the ultimate user of the finished article. The large number of commercially available pigments are reviewed in the context of their use in metal finishes. Fashion changes, technical requirements of new types of finish and legal restrictions on potentially hazardous pigments are the basis for most demands for new pigments. The pigment manufacturer has four major ways in meeting these new requirements: (1) use of existing pigments in a novel manner; (2) modification of existing pigments; (3) production of a new pigment based on existing chromophores and technology; (4) production of a new pigment based on a new chromophore. Throughout the paper each aspect of pigment technology discussed is illustrated by examples.
