Abstract

A brief historical review of the various mandibular prostheses toghether with a critical analysis of the problem of indications, with special reference to malignant tumors. The reasons for the choosing intert metallic materials are explained and the progressive working out of a new mould of prosthesis is described. The prosthesis implants are in a new metallic alloy, CoTi 68 inox, which is biologically inert and stronger that other material; they are provided with mobile segments and a condyle which may be adjusted during the operation. The prosthesis is inserted into the contralateral normal bone by means of a movable, retating, self-centre ring basket, which can be fixed at the desired point. The flathead screws inserted into the laminae are made of the same material. All the parts are supplied in a sterilizable container, ready for use.
