Abstract

The new paleontologists will require an education in the ecology, genetics, and evolution of populations, in biochemistry, physiology, and morphogenesis, and in the physics and chemistry of sediments and sedimentary rocks. They will learn the principles of statistical design and analysis as well as classical methodology in collecting, in field observation, and in laboratory studies. They should receive a knowledge of information theory and computer programming. Paleontology courses will integrate these background fields with paleontologic problems, will provide knowledge for access to paleontologic information, and will introduce the student by direct experience to paleontologic research.
