Abstract

New perovskite type orange red emitting phosphors, SrGd(0.5−x)Nb0.5O3:xEu3+ were synthesized using a high temperature solid state reaction method. Powder XRD results confirm the orthorhombic perovskite type phase and detailed investigations on the photoluminescence and UV absorption studies indicated that Eu3+ doped SrGd0.5Nb0.5O3 phosphors has a strong absorption in the UV region. Intense orange red emission is observed for both near UV (392 nm) and blue (465 nm) excitations matching with the output wavelengths of UV and blue LED chips, which can be attributed to the magnetic and electric dipole transitions (5D0-7F1,2) of Eu3+. The emission intensity of phosphor under UV excitation is found to be much greater compared to that of blue excitation. Concentration quenching is observed at 7.5 mol% Eu3+ doping. The prepared intense orange red emitting phosphor with higher quantum efficiency could be a promising candidate for white light emitting diode applications.
