Abstract

Computational mathematics, science and engineering are rapidly growing multidisciplinary areas with connections to business, economics, engineering, mathematics and computer science through academia as well as industry. There is furthermore a constant need in these fields for the quick and efficient advancement of information exchange with an expert audience. Conferences are organized frequently within specific disciplines, limiting the exchange of information to experts of a specific area. However the “International Conference of Computational and Mathematical Methods in Science and Engineering (CMMSE)” proposed along a series of conferences that have been celebrated, creating a space in which to carry out interdisciplinary meetings where specialists may have information in different areas of science, an opportunity to gather people with new ideas in their field or near their research area and participate in special sessions different from their own areas. In this Conference, the researchers present works that have a strong mathematical foundation and are concerned with the development of mathematical models and solution techniques, that exploit recent advances in computing and are applied to problems of a practical nature. It is with pleasure that we offer to the readers of the Journal of Mathematical Modelling and Algorithms this special issue consisting of different selected contributions presented at the CMMSE-2011,held at Alicante, Spain, June 26–30, 2011. In their work, A mathematical model for the Container Stowage and Ship Routing Problem, Moura et al. [1] present a mathematical model for a fleet of containerships with no pre-defined routes, considering demands and delivery deadlines and over-
