Abstract

Designed for a torque rate of up to 400 Nm, the new six-speed manual transmission by Fiat-GM-Powertrain, internally named F40 transmission, is a new torque transmission benchmark for FWD cars with transverse engine and transmission installation. Development of the new transmission was led by Opel Powertrain GmbH in Russelsheim, Germany. It was first used in the Opel Signum and Vectra in combination with the 2.0 Turbo Ecotec, the 1.9 CDTI, and 3.0 V6 CDTI Ecotec engines. During the development phase of the compact, low mass manual transmission, simple matching provisions for Saab, Pontiac, Fiat, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo models were also included.
