Abstract

Approximately one in five individuals in North Carolina has a behavioral health issue, according to the state's health and human services leadership. The situation is further exacerbated by the hundreds of people in the state who each day wait inside hospital emergency departments (EDs) for behavioral health care. One reason is the lack of a real‐time list of available operational beds, making it difficult to connect people in EDs to care in more appropriate settings.
