M. ; Terzian, Y. ; Eder, J. Abstract The left and right circularly polarized spectra of the supergiant IRC +10420 are presented. The current intensity of the object's +55 km/s feature in the 1612 and 1665 MHz lines is discussed. The 1665 MHz feature is weakening while its 1612 MHz feature is growing more quickly than before. These observations are consistent with a linear growth of the mean flux from the two lines, which originate from the same excited level. The decreasing intensity of the 1665 MHz feature may be due to conversion of 1665 MHz photons from a thriving maser to 1612 MHz photons in the saturated outer layers, as the maser's column length grows outward.
