Abstract

We have observed new odd-parity Rydberg and autoionization levels in uranium I close to its first ionization limit. Our experimental configuration for ion detection and for pulsed electric-field ionization of Rydberg levels results in the observation of two groups of ions, the prompt photoions and delayed electric-field ions. The latter give information exclusively on Rydberg levels. The observed Rydberg progression suggests that a two-electron excitation process of the type 5f36d7s7p → 5f37s2ns or nd is involved for the transitions to Rydberg states.
