Turkka Korvenpa¨a¨, det.M.S.Ignatov in August 2012 (original det. Brachytheciumcampestre) (TUR116496).The specimen ofBrachythecium laetumwas notedby M. S. Ignatov in connection with studies onFinnish material of B. campestre(Mu¨ll.Hal.) Schimp.from the Turku University Herbarium (TUR).Additional collections were searched for withoutsuccess among specimens ofB. salebrosum(Hoffm.ex F.Weber & D.Mohr) Schimp. in TUR. Thispopulation on the island of Na taholm is presentlythe only known population of B. laetum inFennoscandia and the most northern record inEurope. The main distribution of the species isconcentrated in eastern Northern America, where itis a common weed in dry, disturbed habitats such astrails, road banks, and lawns (Crum & Anderson,1981). Southernmost localities in the New World arein Mexico (McFarland, 1994). Besides America, thespecies has been reported from central and southernEurope (Orgaz et al., 2012), the Caucasus andSouthern Ural Mountains in Russia (Ignatov M Orgazet al.,2012). The new record was collected from the TurkuArchipelago, south-western Finland, from rich decid-uous forest, growing on calcareous soil, a habitat thatis rather rare in the country.2.
