Hanly etal.1 and Nishida etal.2 use distinct approaches to provide exceptional lessons regarding the genetic, molecular, morphological, and biochemical bases of butterfly wing pigmentation. These mechanistic insights collectively have important implications for our understanding of phenotype evolution.
