Abstract

The eastern hog-nosed snake (Heterodon platirhinos) is a federally listed species of conservation concern in Canada. Microsatellite markers are desired for research on the spatial structure, degree of isolation and neutral genetic status of the two regional isolated populations in the province of Ontario. We developed 14 microsatellite loci and genotyped 27 individuals from one of the two regional populations. The total number of alleles and the level of expected heterozygosity ranged from 4 to 8 and from 0.35 to 0.84, respectively. These microsatellite loci will be useful for assessing neutral genetic diversity and demarcating functionally independent groups for effective management practices.
