Abstract

This book fills a much-noted gap in the literature available to students of technology and communications in Africa and the developing world. Communications technology is a relatively new field, and the literature is sparse, especially when it comes to issues in the developing world. New media technology and policy in developing countries (2005), edited by N. C. Lesame, with contributions from her and several other South African academics, covers a range of issues from the digital divide to community broadcasting. The book covers technological issues (chapter 3, New Connections, the development of communications technology), social issues (chapters on new media technology and youth, development and the social and economic aspects of the Internet), and issues on policy.
