Abstract

J. L. Dalen, W. A. Nelson, and M. D. Guiry. 2009. New macroalgal record for the New Zealand region: Cephalocystis furcellata (Rhodymeniales, Rhodophyta). Phycologia 48: 66–69. DOI: 10.2216/08-66.1In 1981, samples of a red alga were dredged from the northwestern tip of New Zealand's North Island and initially identified as Botryocladia neushulii. The material was later identified as Cordylecladia furcellata, a species currently assigned to the genus Cephalocystis. We present the first account of this genus outside of Australia. The most striking feature of this alga is the inflated reproductive pods terminating the branches.
