Abstract

We report the results of a recently completed search for a permanent electric dipole moment of 199Hg. The experiment gives d(199Hg)=−(1.06±0.49±0.40)×10−28 e cm, which we interpret as an upper limit |d(199Hg)|<2.1×10−28e cm (95% C.L.). This result represents a factor of 4 improvement over the previous limit and sets new constraints on several CP-violating parameters. In particular, when combined with recent QCD calculations, it now gives the best limit on |θQCD|<1.5×10−10. It also sets a new constraint on chromo-EDMs of the quarks, reducing the range of allowed CP-violating parameters in Supersymmetric models.
