Abstract

New light is shed on G. B. Viotti's early career in a letter written by the English traveller the Revd Thomas Brand in which he describes concerts led by Viotti in Geneva in early 1780. A pupil of the famed violinist Pugnani, who also performed in the concerts, Viotti is described as the better of the two. The letter confirms the accuracy of Miel's report on the Geneva concerts in his early biography of Viotti (1827) and prompts reconsideration not only of Viotti's reputation and his relationship with Pugnani but also his repertoire and the chronology of his early works. According to the Mémoires (1825) of Madame de Genlis, Viotti collaborated with the Danish mechanician, ceramic painter, and musician Hans Henrik Pløtz on a new system of music notation; both were in Geneva in 1780.
