Abstract

Work conducted by Loren Michel et al. and reported in the 18 January issue of Nature, sheds additional light on the aggressive nature of tumour cells. A characteristic associated with the more aggressive cancers is their genetic instability. Taking a particularly stable human colon carcinoma cell line and knocking out one copy of the MAD2 gene resulted in the cell's chromosomes falling apart prematurely during cell division. Moreover the mutated cells continued to grow even in the presence of chemotherapy drugs in the taxane family and suggested that developing a test to detect the changes in this genetic pathway in human cancers could be used to predict disease progression.
