Abstract

In order to avoid the occurrence of non-uniform wall thicknesses in the hot rolling of steel tubes it is necessary to already measure the wall thickness on the hot tube blank (1 230°C). The suitability of a new type of laser-ultrasonic system has been tested by use during production. The generation of the ultrasonics in the blank is accomplished by a short pulse from a high power laser. For detection purposes the echo from the back wall is interferometrica1ly acquired and registered by means of the reflected light of a second laser. With a production speed of approximately 2 m/s the wall thickness measurement were taken via a generating line at intervals of 25 cm along the blank. The measuring device was mounted at a distance of 5 m from the roller table.
