Abstract

Currently, there are over 30 recognized or reputed bacterial agents that are regarded as causes of gastroenteritis. Most clinical microbiology laboratories test for only the most common enteric pathogens. However, three newer bacterial agents, Providencia alcalifaciens, Escherichia albertii, and Klebsiella oxytoca, are worthy of attention and consideration because of their ability to cause diarrhea and outbreaks of infection. In addition, these three bacterial agents possess virulence factors that can produce severe disease. This review summarizes our present knowledge of each bacterial group.
