Abstract

The metabolic syndrome (MS) is a silent growing epidemic linked to life-threatening diseases including heart disease and diabetes. MS is characterized by a cluster of metabolic disorders associated with abdominal obesity. Decreased HDL cholesterol is a major component of the metabolic syndrome in the Gulf region. The role of HDL in reverse cholesterol transport (Good cholesterol) is well established. However, HDL has recently been emphasized as an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant factor. My research focuses on the relation between major components of the metabolic syndrome, particularly lowered HDL-C levels, and metabolic factors linked to oxidative stress.
