Abstract
Effectively managing fairness in the workplace is a critical issue facing organizations - treating employees fairly is associated with a wide range of beneficial outcomes for employees and organizations. Despite these benefits, managers often fail to treat their employees fairly. Drawing upon multiple theoretical perspectives and methodologies, this symposium brings together leading experts investigating “justice as a dependent variable” to provide new insights that can enhance our understanding of (a) how fair behavior can be promoted, including how the characteristics of subordinates (e.g., trustworthiness) and managers (e.g., motivations, self-control) can influence managers’ willingness to enact fairness, (b) the barriers and constraints that can hinder the enactment of fairness, (c) how managers conceptualize fairness and the activities that they focus on to enact justice, and (d) how managers’ enactment of justice can vary over time.
