Abstract

We show for the first time, for any star other than the Sun, the vertical resolution of pulsation modes into standing waves in the atmosphere and running waves in the magnetoacoustic reflective boundary layer of the upper atmosphere. This has only become possible with the novel use of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) on a bright, exceedingly peculiar magnetic star, HD 166473. These are the first observations that may directly test recent theoretical developments for magnetoacoustic stellar pulsation modes in rapidly oscillating Ap stars.
