Abstract

A brief review of physical and cultural geography of the south Pacific island of New Guinea is given. A short history of the development of Project TROPICS is presented, along with a literature review of the geological, physical, chemical, and biological oceanography of the continental shelves of the Gulf of Papua, Bismarck Sea, and Arafura Sea adjacent to New Guinea.
