Abstract

Abstract This short note is to draw attention to an interesting mineral association worthy of further study on the east coast of the Otago Peninsula. A polymict agglomerate belonging to the First Main Eruptive Phase of the Dunedin Volcanic Complex (Benson, 1968) is exposed at the eastern end of Allans Beach. It contains fragments of metasediments as well as the more common local volcanic rocks. Some fragments of black slate in the agglomerate contain blebs up to 5 mm across and films of metallic sulphides. These sulphides are restricted to the fragments of black slate and thus pre-date the brecciation and volcanic activity. The occurrence of metallic sulphides in carbonaceous black shale is common and is thought to be a primary sedimentary association, the sulphides being precipitated along with the shale (Dunham, 1961).
