Abstract

New Gladiolus “Candida Ali” and “Excelsa” were released by the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca (USAMV) in 2008. A cross was made between early flowering cyclamen and early flowering pink (“Early Riser” x “Priscilla”) cultivars for cultivar “Candida Ali” and between pink and move-cyclam cultivars (“Priscilla” x “Speranţa”) for “Excelsa”. They were crossed in 2001 and finally selected in 2006 after investigation of the characteristics for 4 years from 2002 to 2006. “Candida Ali” has a multiple middle sized bright pink-cyclamen florets with good simultaneous flowering. This cultivar is early flowering, has vigorous growth. The width of “Candida Ali” flower is 11.5 cm. The plant height is 112.1 cm. Days to flowering of “Candida Ali” is average 77 days in summer season. “Excelsa” is very early flowering after 66 days, color red-coral having over 100 cm height with floral stem to 45 cm. Spike having 14.3 florets with 11.4 cm diameter, having good multiplication capacity. These new gladiolus cultivars homologated contribute to improving the Romanian Gladiolus assortment and are multiplied for promoting in commercial culture.
