the papers in this special issue examine the increasingly significant problem of ethically-based separatist movements and ensuing conflicts in three nation-states of Southeast Asia: -Burma - among the Karens, Karennis, Shans, Mons, and others -Indonesia - in Acch, Riau, Papua, Sulawesi, Bali, and others, in addition to an already independent East Timor. -Philippines - among the Bangsamoro in Mindanao.
