Abstract

Recently a project that was initiated and managed by the Columbus Laboratories of Battelle Memorial Institute positioned a geodetic marker on the Pacific Ocean floor 130 miles southwest of Los Angeles. It may well be the first step in the development of a practical means for precisely establishing locations in the ocean. The placing of the marker is the culmination of an experiment being conducted by several organizations that include Aerojet‐General Corporation, Bendix Electrodynamics Division, and Seismograph Service Corporation's SEISCOR Division. Creating the marine geodetic control point required a joint effort of sea, air, and land research teams.
