Abstract

The use of pesticides that, on the one hand, are efficient in plant pest management and, on the other hand, exhibit extremely high toxicity to aquatic organisms on the territory of the Russian Federation has been considered as one of the real threats for the chemical safety of Russia. Using the example of the Karatoshans pesticide (emulsion concentrate, 50 g/L of lambda-cyhalothrin), which is included in the “State Catalogue of Pesticides and Agrochemicals Approved for Use on the Territory of the Russian Federation” in spite of the negative opinion of the State Ecological Expertise, the possible impacts on aquatic ecosystems caused by the uncontrolled penetration of the compound into surface water bodies have been shown. It has been concluded that the Russian Federation should legislate against the circulation of pesticides that are highly toxic to aquatic organisms and can hardly be analytically controlled in aqueous media at the level of maximum permissible concentrations.
