Abstract

The formation of syndiotactic polystyrene in the presence of catalysts was investigated. The yield of syndiotactic polystyrene obtained in a 240 dcm3 pilot plant reactor was 7 - 15 kg/charge. The weight-average molecular weight was about 200 000 g/mol and the syndiotacticity was about 96%. Composites based on the syndiotactic polystyrene have also been obtained. The polymer was granulated with the stabiliser (Irganox 1076) and modifiers in a twin-screw extruder with double degassing. It was then reinforced by glass fibre or talc. Syndiotactic polystyrene was also modified with polyoxyphenylene and linear polyethylene. The structure and physical and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated.
