Abstract

A new, simple equation describing the turbulent velocity profile over flat plates is developed by using the control volume statements of mass and momentum conservation. This expression accurately gives the velocity in the laminar sublayer, buffer zone, and logarithmic regions. Velocity profile results are compared to accepted data and a new expression for the eddy viscosity is also compared to measurements made near the wall. The development is then extended to include the effects of plate roughness, producing a simple but more general equation. An application which utilizes the new equations to analyze sediment transport is presented.
