Abstract

Existing power system transmission line fault location algorithms normally entail measurements from one-, two-or multi-terminals of the faulty line. This paper presents a general fault location approach utilizing only voltage measurements from one or more terminals by taking advantage of network analysis based on bus impedance matrix technique. The distinctive feature is that the buses with measurements can be far away from the faulted line. The proposed method for constructing the bus impedance matrix of the network with addition of a fictitious bus, where the fault occurs, as a function of the fault location may provide an efficient way for analyzing line faults. Preliminary studies have shown quite encouraging results.
