Abstract

The analysis of the double object construction (NP NP) raises several important theoretical issues. What is the parameter which allows the construction in some grammars and not in others? What are the semantic properties of the construction with respect to those of the double complement construction (NP PP)? Does dominance or precedence account for the Theme/Goal asymmetries exhibited by the construction? Is there a transformational relationship between the double object construction and the serial verb construction? Is there a transformational relationship between the double object and the double complement construction? How is the double object construction derived? What does determine the range of verbs participating in the double object construction in a given language? The particular data of Fongbe (a West African language of the Kwa family spoken mainly in Benin) leads to a clarification of these issues.
