Abstract

Observations on Au/sup 197/ nuclear spectra are discussed. A level having J = 3/2/sup +/ and one having J = 7/2/sup +/ in Au/sup 197/, absent in Tl/ sup 197/, and a small value of mu (1/2/sup +/) in Au/sup 197/ as compared with mu (1/2/sup +/) in Tl/sup 203/ and Tl/sup 205/ were observed. A coreexcitation model explains these results. The 79th proton goes into the d/sub 3/2, orbit, and the 81st, into the s/sub 1/2 orbit. The lowest positive parity excited states result from coupling this odd nucleon to the 2/sup +/ state of the core; this leads to the quadruplet 1/2/sup +/, 3/2/sup +/, 5/2/sup +/, and 7/2/sup +/ for 79 protons and to the doublet 3/2/sup +/ and 7/2/sup +/ for 81 protons.
