Abstract

AbstractA sensitive electroanalytical procedure is described for the detection of chloride ion down to micromolar concentration and over a wide linear range of (3.5) decades. The method is based on the blockage of a Pt anode caused by competitive adsorption of chloride ion, using cyclic voltammetry. The blocking effect is proportional to p[Cl−] over a wide concentration range; the significance of this relationship is discussed. The required conditions for this electroanalytical procedure are described and interferences from other anions are evaluated. The new method is sensitive, accurate, and simple, and it is useful for analyzing trace chloride ion in nominally pure inorganic chemicals.
