Abstract
THE NEW editor-in-chief of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) is Jerome P. Kassirer, MD, an internist and nephrologist. Kassirer, who is the Sara Murray Jordan Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, and Associate Physician-in-Chief at the New England Medical Center, both in Boston, Mass, will assume his new position in July. He is the 38th person to head the journal since its start in 1812, succeeding Arnold S. Relman, MD, who announced his retirement last July after 14 years as editor. In addition to being an honored educator—he received the 1989 Alpha Omega Alpha Distinguished Clinical Science Teacher Award at Tufts—the 58-year-old Kassirer has published extensively.
