Abstract

The process of developing new drugs is a complex activity requiring the involvement of several scientific as well as nonscientific disciplines. Figure I. presents a schematic illustration of the new drug development kaleidoscope. Every pharmaceutical company, of course, takes a slightly different approach to new drug development. Similarly, each therapeutic drug class requires a slightly different development scheme. This brief review will present the generic approach to new drug development.
