Abstract
The approach to providing mental health services to children and their families has begun to change. Traditionally these services were provided by public and private mental health agencies that operated as a “mental health” system. New approaches attempt to integrate and/or coordinate the mental health system with the social welfare, juvenile justice, health, and special education systems to form a more unified children's service system. Inherent in these changes are expansion of the continuum of care to include new forms of intervention, the creation of new funding strategies, and a new role for parents.
