Abstract

The concept and new design principles for urban railway shotcrete tunnels in Japan are discussed in this paper. Before the tunnel can be designed, an outline of shape, size and countermeasures must be determined. Based on this new standard, the design is then divided into two stages. In the basic design stage, the following design items are constructed: tunnel cross section shape, excavation method, countermeasures, and fore-piling method. Design items for the detailed design stage include: tunnel supports, lining and invert concrete, waterproofing and drainage, portal, and observation. The authors conclude that the proposed design standard will be appropriate for not only railway tunnels, but urban shotcrete tunnels in general.
