Abstract

The responses of the transport sector in South Australia to what was (in the mid - 1970s) considered to be a fat bureaucracy are outlined in this paper. An attempt is made to demonstrate that considerable progress has been achieved in providing the same or improved level of service with fewer resources, and that hardship creates opportunities to implement innovative approaches. The apparent inability to apply standards uniformly in the states transport agencies is a continuing concern, as savings in some areas are wasted elsewhere in the portfolio in other state government organisations.
