Abstract

A new neutron-deficient isotope 196Rn has been produced and identified on the basis of genetic correlations in the 166Er (36Ar, 6n) 196Rn (Elab = 208 MeV) reaction. By using a gas-filled recoil separator and a position-sensitive silicon detector (PSD) placed at its focal plane, the α-decay energy and half-life of 196Rn have been determined to be 7492 ± 30 keV and 3−+7 ms, respectively.
